decorative column bastia

This is a very simple but stylish model of cast architectural and decorative columns. Discrete and elegant, this ornamental and structural cast piece fits in every environment. We discovered this model in the town of Bastia, on the East-Northern coast of Corsica. This decorative modular column is very well suited for terraces, verandah's, pergolas, arcades, canopies, gazebo's, patios but also for interior decoration or renovation works of traditional mansions.

It is a simple structural pillar, but very ornamental thanks to its traditional antique decorative cast pieces at both ends. It is also really easy to install. We recommend to lacquer it in a somewhat 'clear' colour so as to put the accent on its simple elegance.

The town of Bastia is located on the North-East of Corsica, at the base of the "Cap Corse". It was founded in1378 by the Genoese, who wanted to possess a 'pied-à-terre' in Corsica. The town developed itself from the 14th until the 17th century following tha traditional Genoese plan, with streets crossing themselves at right angles. It is a charming and somewhat rather 'baroque' town; but it is a very dynamic place to live. Start your visit with a look at Cardo, a charming small typical village overhanging Bastia, at 10 minutes walking from the town center. Then visit the completely renovated citadel that was build by the Genoese, and thereafter the 'jardin Romieu' which is a haven of peace in the middle of the old town. Have a look also at the old port, and at the market place: these are places to feel the real mediterranean ambiance.

What you should not miss in the neighborhood of Bastia (but on the western coast of the 'Cap Corse) is the 'Palazzi dei Americano': superb and luxurious but somewhat 'rococo'or 'crooked' villas that were build there around 1900-1920 by Corsicans who emigrated to the USA, and made a fortune there before coming back to their home country. These villas were obviously built and decorated by whealthy persons, but sometimes more 'wealthy' than aesthetically educated...That's worth having a look anyway.

Our 'Bastia' model of structural and decorative columns are cast in our Belgian aluminum sand-casting foundry, incorporated some 60 years ago: quality, craftsmanship and tradition. The classical European style.
